According to Censis, 44% of the Italian population speaks a foreign language well enough to participate in a conversation, less than the EU average of 59%. In 2012, however, they were only 38%, so they increased by 6 percentage points.
A second and third foreign language are spoken by 16% and 7% of the population respectively. 15-39 year-olds who speak at least one foreign language are 69% compared to 50% of 40-54 year-olds and 22% of 55 year-olds and over.
29% of 15-39 year-olds speak two foreign languages compared to 17% of 40-54 year-olds and 6% of 55 year-olds and over. At least three foreign languages are spoken by 12% of 15-39 year-olds compared to 9% of 40-54 year-olds and 2% of 55 year-olds and over. In first place is English, spoken by 33% of Italians, followed by French (9%) and Spanish (6%).
